Behind Clarity Principles

Meet the experience behind the book, explore the thinking that shaped it, and see where the conversation can go from here.

The Person Behind It

Mike Dennison

For more than 30 years, Mike has worked inside organizations as part of their leadership teams, sharing responsibility for the decisions, people, and outcomes.

His experience includes embedded leadership roles inside organizations such as Amazon, Disney, General Motors, Walmart, and USAA, along with worldwide leadership responsibility at IBM. He has also spent decades advising owners and leaders of businesses of all sizes.

Clarity Principles wasn’t written from the outside looking in. It’s built from patterns Mike has seen repeatedly, from the inside, as organizations grow, evolve, and become more complex.

What Shaped the Book

A lens built from 30+ years inside organizations.

Organizations watch for scope creep in projects. Far fewer are watching for this kind of creep across the business itself.

Clarity Principles grew out of a simple observation: responsibilities shift, decisions move upward, and workarounds quietly become how things are done. None of it happens overnight, and none of it looks like a mistake while it’s happening. The book helps leaders recognize what’s worth protecting alongside what has simply become normal.

How Mike Works With Leaders

Sometimes the most valuable thing is another experienced leader in the room.

Mike works with owners, CEOs, and leadership teams when something important is happening inside the business and an experienced outside perspective would be useful.

Sometimes that’s helping a leadership team recognize what’s getting in the way. Sometimes it’s challenging assumptions around growth or strategy. Sometimes it’s helping leaders get aligned around a difficult issue. Sometimes it’s stepping into a leadership meeting, planning session, or retreat and asking questions the people closest to the business may no longer be asking.

The work takes different forms because the situations are different. The common thread is bringing decades of operating and leadership experience into the room, and helping leaders see what they may not be seeing on their own.

“

Mike Dennison has a way of helping leaders name what many of us feel inside growing organizations. Things still work, but somehow everything starts to feel heavier. Decisions take longer. Coordination takes more effort. Too much depends on too few people. Complexity starts moving faster than clarity.

Mike in the Room

Sometimes a different voice changes the conversation.

Mike speaks with leadership teams and business audiences about the patterns that quietly get in the way of growth, execution, and leadership effectiveness. Whether it’s a leadership retreat, planning session, company meeting, or larger event, the objective is the same: help people see something they weren’t seeing before, and create a better conversation about what happens next.
